SAFETY AT HOME: SAVE THE CHILDREN
If a doctor told you that your child had leukemia, you would move heaven and earth to get your youngster the best medical care, while hoping for a cure. Yet a home injury that could be prevented is much more likely than leukemia to kill a child under the age of 15.
Dr. Greensher tells of a little girl whose face was badly burned when she pulled a pot of hot soup down off the gas range. "I guess she's been too lucky up to now," the mother said. "It was just her turn."
The mother blamed "luck" to turn the blame away from herself. Had she turned the pot handles toward the center of the stove or used back burners only, her daughter couldn't have reached them, so no "accident" would have happened. Parents must teach themselves and their children to spot and avoid hazards.
Dr. Greensher lists three risk factors for children:
- Personality. At high risk are curious toddlers, retarded children, and stubborn, hot-tempered, overly aggressive boys and girls.
- Unsafe objects. Obviously dangerous are matches, guns, and fireplaces. Easily overlooked but also potentially lethal are these: too-small (swallowable), sharp-edged, or toxic toys; boiling-hot water from a faucet; medicines and poisons. Learn first aid - the wrong care can kill - and post your Poison Control Center's number near all phones.
- The social environment - the family. A caring person must watch a child's every move. Mary Parker of Wantagh, New York, learned just how quick her 10-month-old daughter, Nicole, could be when the infant suddenly fell down the basement stairs. "All I could think was 'Please, God, let her be alright,"' says Mrs. Parker. Nicole sustained only cuts and bruises.
When we're under stress, watchfulness declines. Dr. Greensher cites studies showing that risk rises with:
- hunger and fatigue in child or parent,
- tension either in one parent or between parents,
- a mother's illness or pregnancy or a family death,
- a change in the child's caretaker or living quarters, and
- preoccupation with personal matters or too much housework or child care.
