By the use of stealth, subterfuge, trick and treat, dieting with a partner, slogans such as "less is more," and visual aids such as "naked truth in the mirror test," Ms. Kalter was able to reduce Michael's weight by thirty-seven pounds. I suspect this success is in great part due to Michael's willing cooperation.

In my boyhood home, I was able to determine the day of the week by the main course at the dinner meal. Michael Gershman's diet was made more varied by the use of "veggies," including such delicacies as cactus leaves and fiddlehead ferns. He celebrates special occasions with crisp bacon and too-fatty duck, and gets goose only on Christmas. I have known for a long time that men are the privileged sex, but Ms. Kalter points out that once achieved, weight loss is more readily maintained by them.

I commend Ms. Kalter for her valiant efforts and success in the case of her husband and for this helpful, hopeful book. If you are a woman who loves a man, you will want to read this book and learn how to help your man to a new level of well-being.
