NOURISHING AND TOXIC LIVING: NATURAL FUNCTIONING

Natural functioning is determined by our capabilities and potentials. Toxic influences are those which violate this natural functioning. It is a natural function, based on physiological structure, for the infant to defecate on biological demand. His structure is such that his body spontaneously forces out waste material. He lacks the muscular ability to constrain his need to defecate. Thus, toilet training in early infancy is a toxic intrusion. It is an attempt to modify the infant's functioning by placing an unnatural and unrealistic demand on the existing structure. In an effort to respond to this kind of toxic demand, the infant's body begins to tighten and lose its gracefulness. He becomes awkward and inhibited.

It is unreasonable to suggest that a person can be spontaneous at all times, even in early childhood, and still function in a group. Social living inevitably demands numerous restraints on the spontaneity of each person. Since our society provides us with many satisfactions and gratifications (nourishment), some] pressure is a necessary part of the reality of group living. Pressure becomes toxic, however, when it is unrealistic or excessive in the limitations it places on our spontaneity. The toxic intrusion in this example could be lessened by a delay in toilet training until the infant's structure (sphincter muscles) has developed sufficiently to be capable of the task demanded and until he can comprehend what he is being asked to inhibit (regulate).
