PROBLEMS OF BEING OLDER: TALKING ABOUT RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES
Elderly people with disabilities or health problems - and enough money - are moving in increasing numbers to continuing-care communities. There you pay an entrance fee that ranges from 5,000 to 300,000 dollars, depending on the elegance and size of the place, and a monthly fee, from as little as 300 up to 2,700 dollars, to cover food, housekeeping, and other services. In some cases, up to 90 percent of the entrance fee is returned when you leave. (If you die, it's given to your family.) Some communities offer nothing back, so it's wise to go over the contract with a lawyer or financial adviser.
These villages guarantee continuing care in a nursing home attached to the community. In some, the monthly fee can go as high as 3,600 dollars if you transfer to the nursing home - which, over time, could pauperize anyone except the very rich.
To overcome that problem, some villages offer a "life-care" program that promises nursing-home care for the rest of your life, if you need it. The financial arrangement varies with each organization. If Medicare or Medicaid approves of the nursing home, the costs will be covered.
Meadow Lakes, in Hightstown, New Jersey, looks like a fancy hotel - a series of low buildings connected by all-weather corridors sitting in a lush, well-kept garden. The 400 residents, whose average age is 85, live in one- or two-bedroom apartments. They receive one meal a day for their monthly fee, which ranges up to 4,730 dollars.
Louise Cook, 78, a retired telephone representative living at Meadow Lakes, spoke of being surrounded by people her own age all the time. Sometimes, she admits, she needs "a youth fix." Then, smiling slyly, she adds, "Of course, the need is over in a few hours of visiting, and, happily, it's time to go home."
If you want to be sure that no young people can move into your retirement village, check to see whether it meets HUD's new standard, which says 80 percent of a retirement community's residents must be older than 55. In 1988, Congress voted that unless they meet this rule, retirement communities must open up their housing to young families.
A strong warning comes from Dr. Charles F. Longino, Jr., professor of sociology at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and an expert on migration during later years. "People tend to fantasize about places that are the opposite of where they are living," Longino says. "When you move to a place, it tends not to live up to your fantasy because, when you vacationed there, it was the best time of the year." The lesson: Get to know the place year-round before you move or plunk down a deposit to buy new housing.
If you're inclined to move for whatever reason, study the situation carefully. It may be your last migration. With care, you can make it a happy one.
