PREPARING FOR OLD AGE: CORRECTABLE PROBLEMS
Whether you are now young or old (or young-old or old-old), no illness should go untreated. However, not all of the physical and emotional discomforts of old age are caused by disease alone.
Here, Dr. John Rowe lists 10 of the most common impairments of old age that often can be corrected by proper diagnosis and treatment:

  1.      Memory loss. The patient may be ill with kidney disease, suffering a nutritional deficiency, or simply taking too many medicines.
  2.      Hearing loss. Many old people are poorly fitted with hearing aids. Unlike glasses, which can be purchased only with a doctor's prescription, hearing aids can be had for cash in stores where salespeople may not be properly trained to fit them. You have to learn whether the seller has been trained by asking where he or she was trained. If it's the company that makes the hearing aid, beware.
  3.      Visual impairments. Modern surgery removes cataracts, drugs relieve glaucoma (pressure in the eyeball), and lasers can sometimes repair degeneration of the retina.
  4.      Unsteady gait or falling down. This condition may indicate low blood pressure.
  5.      Mental depression. Feeling helpless, sad, disoriented, and confused may come from taking too many drugs. Sometimes the patient is under-stimulated and needs more conversation and attention from caretakers.
  6.      Weight loss. The simplest but often overlooked cause is that the patient is not eating; the reason may be loneliness, poor teeth, depression, or the fact that no one is available to prepare the food.
  7.      Chest pain. An irregular heart rhythm may be at fault. If so, it can be corrected by a pacemaker.
  8.      Fainting. This is another sign of irregular heart rhythm that may necessitate a pacemaker.
  9.      Incontinence. The inability to control urination may result from weak pelvic muscles. Women can sometimes correct this problem with special exercises. In men, the prostrate gland is usually at fault, and surgical removal may be the answer.
  10.      Painful joints. The Arthritis Foundation recommends mild exercise to combat this classic symptom of arthritis.

"Everyone wants to live forever, but nobody wants to grow old," says Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg.
Perhaps the best way to combat the inevitable, or to feel as if we have, is to plan our later years around the advice of Dr. Robert Butler, chairman of the Department of Geriatrics at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He says one of the most important things for old people is to have a goal in life.
It's important, he says, to build into your life various activities, no matter what they are. The list is endless: gardening, bridge, reading, tutoring, working for a local charity or political organization, being a Big Brother, taking care of other old people, creating art, playing music.
"We find that people with a purpose and goal and an organized daily life live longer, are healthier and happier than those who wander aimlessly through their old age," says Dr. Butler.
It is sound advice for all.
