PREPARING FOR OLD AGE: KEEPING MENTALLY ALERT
You can't teach an old dog new tricks, the saying goes, meaning that the elderly cannot learn anything new. Not so, say researchers. The latest studies show that old people can learn a great deal though not as quickly as young people. But their accumulated experience often gives them an edge. They have seen it all before and know what to do.
Other changes in mental ability occur as well. At Harvard University, Dr. Marylin Albert examined old people's thinking abilities and found that the main problem was remembering names. "They know what something is and how to use it and they know a person, but they cannot call up the name," she says. "It seems to be a naming problem."
Dr. Albert also discovered that the elderly have more trouble than young people doing two things at once. But this doesn't interfere with their doing a good job if they organize their work so that they tackle only one task at a time.
With strong mental abilities intact, many old people are going back to school. One program, Elderhostel, arranges summer vacations for old people at American universities. They study everything from mathematics to music.
Robert Fleming, 73, a retired phone company accountant from Little Rock, went to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville to study computer science, piano, and European politics. "It gets you interested in other things," he says. "It gets the cobwebs out of your mind."
