SAFETY AT HOME: SURVIVING FIRES
Tremendous progress has been made in the reduction of home fire fatalities as a result, in large part, of the widespread installation of smoke detectors in homes. In 1977, only one household in five had them; today, that figure has risen to 13 of 14 homes, or 93 percent of households. Fire deaths fell from 7,400 in 1977 to 4,300 in 1994.
The National Fire Protection Association, in its Learn Not to Burn program, suggests the following protective measures:

  •      Have an escape plan and practice it with your family. But take it easy. Make it somewhat of a game. Such a drill can frighten young children.
  •      Get outside first; then call the fire department.
  •      Crawl low in clean air if you get trapped in smoke.
  •      Get a fire extinguisher and smoke detectors. Train the family to use them. Again, caution is advised with young children.
  •      Keep doors closed and close them as you escape a fire.
  •      Stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch fire.

Tabatha Alcala, 8, of Phoenix, Arizona, heard most of these ideas from Tiller the Clown. Tiller, an actor trained by the fire department, spoke to her second-grade class. Tabatha, on her own, saved her baby sister and a young cousin by leading them to safety when, with her parents gone, a kitchen grease fire broke out. She followed the rules. Surely, we can too.

Find Those Traps - and Fix Them
Lock up firearms, out of sight.
Keep medicines capped, securely stored.
Use smoke detectors.
Keep pots on stove out of tots' reach.
Stairs: place handrails on both sides, and add light switches.
Carefully store gasoline and other flammables.
Avoid scalds: Set the hot-water heater at 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Lock up poisons and chemicals - follow labels' directions.
Loose rugs? Tape them to the floor.
Don't know wattage limits? Use bulbs of 60 watts or less to avoid fires.
Cap unused wall outlets.
Watchfulness is a small price to pay for your child's or elderly parents' lives. Remember: accidents do not happen; they are mostly caused by human beings.
