PREVENTING CHILDREN INJURIES
To help prevent child injuries, the American Academy of Pediatrics has designed TIPP (The Injury Prevention Program), which shows pediatricians how to guide parents with these questions.
For Newborns to Age 1
- Do you leave the baby home alone? Bad idea. A baby cannot deal with dogs, strangers, or fires.
- Do you use smoke or fire detectors? Great idea. The alarm gives you precious minutes to escape.
- Do you leave the child unattended on tables or beds? Babies can roll over and sustain injuries as they fall to the floor.
For Toddlers through High School
- Do you check for safety hazards in other homes where your child may play? You had better do so. A child cannot be counted on to detect and correct high-risk situations.
- Do you have safety caps on all bottles of medicine? Good idea. Children can swallow lethal pills thinking they are candy. When your child visits Grandma and Grandpa, the chances are that their home is a veritable drugstore with easy-to-open caps because grandparents often have arthritis and cannot manage the safety caps.
- Do you let a child bathe alone? It takes 2 to 3 minutes for a baby to drown in a bathtub.
The general rule is this: If a child can be hurt by something, a child will be hurt. Parents should try to keep dangerous objects locked away, and their eyes locked on their children.
