SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP OF PEOPLE WITH SPINAL CORD INJURY

For people in a regular intimate relationship, reestablishing a sexual relationship can begin even before leaving the rehabilitation hospital. Many rehabilitation hospitals provide information on sexuality in the form of books, manuals, or videotapes, and they may have sexual education or counseling sessions in which partners are included. Some rehabilitation hospitals have a special suite of rooms, set up like an apartment, where patients can practice daily living skills (cooking, wheelchair transfers, bathing, and so on) along with a spouse or caregiver before going home. An overnight stay here can also afford the opportunity for sexual experimentation with your partner. Ideally, any unexpected sexual problems or concerns can then be talked through with rehabilitation staff before the first visit home.
Even before you are ready for an independent overnight with your partner, you can begin focusing on sexuality in the context of your overall relationship. This might begin with paying more attention to your grooming, clothing, and overall appearance, making sure you have time alone with your partner during visits, and continuing your usual expressions of affection, such as kissing, hugging, and talking about your sexual or romantic feelings.
If you are a partner of a person with spinal cord injury, keep in mind that your mate isn't "breakable." Don't be afraid to embrace him. If you have any doubts about the safety of any physical activity (such as sitting on his lap while he's in the wheelchair) ask a nurse or doctor. If your partner has significant sensory loss, make sure you ask her what parts feel good to the touch. She may enjoy having her head scratched or stroked, her face and neck caressed, or her back rubbed. Communication and experimentation between partners about pleasurable sensations; physical, verbal, and visual expressions of affection; and openness to asking questions and receiving information on sexuality - all are important aspects of sexuality.
On resuming regular sexual contact outside the hospital, the person with spinal cord injury may need to deal with specific physiological dysfunctions and practical inconveniences - such as difficulty with maintaining an erection or catheter management - as part of the sexual routine. It is most helpful, however, to stay focused on your sexuality rather than the sex act as you begin to reestablish your sexual relationship. Focusing primarily on intercourse, or any other specific sex act, can produce anxiety about performance or "making it work," with unnecessary experiences of "failure." Try not to turn your sexual experiences into work. Instead, focus on playing around with your partner and having fun! If you focus on mutual pleasure, including emotional, sensual, and sexual elements, some degree of success is guaranteed.
