The ability to love and experience emotional intimacy is part of normal development. An adolescent, whose capacity for sexual love and intimacy is not yet fully developed, needs to learn or maintain the social skills and opportunities that allow an age-appropriate expression of sexuality, rather than letting a spinal cord injury halt his or her development in this important area. Self-esteem, physical attractiveness, communication, dating, and romance are important issues for teens.
For an adult already involved in a loving sexual relationship at the time of injury, reestablishing a satisfactory relationship is an important part of overall adjustment. Emotional flexibility, experimenting with various sexual activities and a capacity for playfulness are some factors that can enhance sexual satisfaction.
