SPINAL CORD INJURY: WAYS TO MINIMIZE PHYSICAL STRESS AND EXHAUSTION
Physical stress and exhaustion are not products of your personal failure. These are common phenomena when close family members assume care for a person with a significant disability. But you can minimize this stress in several ways.
- Stay in tune with your limits. When you "run out of steam," take a break. Ask for help from other relatives or friends, or consider hiring part-time help if you can afford it.
- Make sure the person with a spinal cord injury is really taking on all the activities he can. Encourage him to maximize his strength by keeping up with physical therapy or an exercise program if appropriate, and to do everything possible to avoid medical problems. Let him lighten your load when possible - for example, by carrying items on his lap when you are shopping together. Women in the study on marriage mentioned earlier found it very helpful, both practically and psychologically, to support their husband's autonomy and independence. "Although participants were willing to assume a heavier domestic role and/or economic role within their relationships . . . they expected their partners to make contributions . . . commensurate with their abilities, and to share in responsibility when it was feasible."
- Ask your local rehabilitation center about technological aids that can make your job as a caregiver easier, such as an automatic lift to transfer your family member in and out of bed. Let the doctor or therapist know if you are feeling strained, and ask about ideas and resources for assistance.
- If the person you are caring for requires constant care - for example, because she uses a ventilator or because of a medical problem - you may want to look into respite care, which many nursing homes can provide. While families often hesitate to "put" their loved one in a nursing home, this is sometimes the only way to get a much needed vacation from the physical demands of care-giving. And it may actually provide your disabled loved one with the temporary luxury of being cared for as much or as little as he wants and not having to push himself to meet family expectations..
