SPINAL CORD INJURY: PHYSICAL STRAIN

Families feel the physical impact of their loved one's disability when they have to take over physically demanding chores that were once performed by the person with spinal cord injury, while at the same time providing attendant care or other physical assistance for the injured person. A homemaker, whose husband is injured, may be faced -with double duty, taking on chores that were once the husband's responsibility, such as yard work, household repairs, or shoveling snow. A husband working full-time whose wife has a severe spinal cord injury might have to take on additional homemaking chores in the evening, such as cooking and cleaning, bathing the children, or shopping for groceries. A spouse may also have to help the injured person transfer in and out of a wheelchair, push the wheelchair, assist with bathing or dressing, and act as a "gofer" for items that aren't readily accessible to his or her mate. When the person with spinal cord injury develops a medical complication, for example a decubitus ulcer (pressure sore), the spouse may temporarily have to assume all responsibility for running the home.

When you feel overtired, it's a signal that you've done too much and need a break.
