SKIN AND COSMETICS: HAIR DYES

The desire to hide grey hair is not a twentieth-century phenomenon. Hair-dying dates back to ancient Egypt, when natural henna dyes were used. Today, hair dying is very sophisticated, allowing an individual to choose almost any shade. Most dyes are made of synthetic materials, and even henna dyes are now rarely derived from the original plant source.

Permanent hair dyes
Permanent hair dyes are made of paraphenylene diamine and hydrogen peroxide, and are used mainly in hair salons. They can make the hair darker or lighter. More recently, many of these dyes have incorporated sunscreens to prevent the colour from fading after sun exposure. Overall, these products cause few problems, but occasionally allergic reactions occur to paraphenylene diamine. Ideally, you should be tested for allergic reactions before a hair dye is used.
Semi-permanent hair dyes
These hair dyes generally last four to six shampoos and can be bought from chemists. Some of the newer semi-permanent hair dyes contain paraphenylene diamine, and so are similar to permanent hair dyes. Others contain dyes used in colouring textiles. The disadvantage of semi-permanent hair dyes is that they can only make the hair darker, not lighter.

Temporary hair dyes
Temporary hair dyes are available in shampoo or spray form. They generally last one shampoo unless the hair is permed or processed, in which case the colour may last four to six shampoos. The main purpose of temporary hair dyes is to get rid of yellow tones in the hair, but if too much dye is used the hair may develop a purple or blue tinge (the so-called 'blue rinse').

Metallic hair dyes
Metallic hair dyes, which are made of silver or lead, are popular with men who wish to cover their grey hairs but who are afraid of being seen in a hair salon having their hair coloured! These dyes plate the hair shafts, turning them a browny colour and successfully covering a small amount of grey hair. Metallic dyes make the hair brittle, however, and the hair cannot be permed or treated with permanent hair dye if they have been used.
