RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PEOPLE WITH SPINAL CORD INJURY AND THEIR FAMILIES: DESPERATION AND BARGAINING

There was a small chapel on the grounds of the Catholic hospital where Bella was being treated. Though she is not a Catholic, Lamar sought out the mother superior to tell her of the recent events and of her worries. The mother superior replied, "You know, Madame, I think you need a little espresso." Lamar was grateful for the small comfort of coffee and a friendly ear. As they sat together, Lamar heard the nuns singing in the chapel. She asked the mother superior if the community would pray for Bella. The mother superior invited Lamar to speak to the nuns. They walked to the front of the chapel and Lamar told the nuns briefly about her daughter. The nuns recited in unison a prayer to a female saint, perhaps Saint Teresa. Lamar was touched by the beauty of the prayer and felt hopeful again.
Lamar recalls another touching moment. She was staying at a boarding house near the hospital. Each morning she went into a common room for breakfast with the other guests. She became friendly with another couple, and their son brought holy water from Lourdes for Bella. Before Bella's injury, Lamar would never have put her faith in holy water. But she found herself excited by the possibility of a cure for Bella. "1 was so grateful for the holy water. I snuck it into the Intensive Care Unit where Bella was on a respirator." She wanted to put it on Bella's feet.
"What are you doing, Mom?" Lamar at first replied that she wasn't doing anything, but finally admitted her intentions. Bella protested, reminding her mother that they weren't Catholic and didn't believe in such things. Lamar recalls feeling "panic," wanting some connection to Cod and being afraid to let go of the holy water.
The doctors were skeptical about Bella's prospects for survival. Bella's mother-in-law, Marie, came to the hospital to ask Lamar for some of Bella's clothing. Marie said she had heard about a witch who thought she could help Bella (and who was "highly recommended"), and Marie needed to provide the witch with some of Bella's clothing. Lamar gave Marie the clothing.
Bella did survive and Lamar was not sure whom to thank: God? The holy water? Saint Teresa? The witch?
As the family member of a person with spinal cord injury, your feelings of powerlessness and fear may sometimes make you desperate. Whether concerned with the very survival of your injured loved one or with his ability to walk, you may feel so driven to find a cure that you're willing to suspend your usual judgment. Like Lamar, you may be tempted to try anything from holy water to witchcraft, regardless of your previous belief system or that of your loved one. Following the initial emotional shock and numbness, you may experience a period of heightened energy, even a mild euphoria. During this time you may be tempted to pursue a frantic search for a cure. You may experience a kind of tunnel vision, recognizing only the hoped-for goal and blocking out the reality of your loved one's disability.
"Bargaining" with God for the complete recovery of your family member may be a part of your search. Bargaining can include participating in religious or superstitious rituals not necessarily related to your usual belief system, making resolutions or personal sacrifices "in exchange" for your loved one's healing, or dedicating all your time and energy to the care of the injured person, with the hope that your "righteousness" will be rewarded with a cure. Bargaining sometimes seems to work, temporarily, and initial improvements in your loved one may encourage false hopes or a denial of reality. But in most cases, the hoped-for miracle does not occur and no further bargains can be struck. When your injured family member begins rehabilitation or leaves rehabilitation still using a wheelchair, the reality of the situation begins to sink in. This can precipitate a "crash" in which depression and anger are the dominant feelings.
